Why Professor McGonagall gave Hermione the Time Turner

The Time Turner played a major role in the climax of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. But how did Hermione get it exactly?

The third novel Harry Potter series, prisoner of azkaban, introduced time travel and had it play a part in the film’s climax. Throughout the Hogwarts school year, Harry’s best friend, Hermione Granger, became stressed by the enormous amount of schoolwork she received. She even takes several overlapping classes and it would be impossible to attend in real time but refuses to tell Harry or Ron how she does it.

However, when Harry and Hermione discover that Harry’s godfather, Sirius Black, has been tricked into freeing him in a short time, Hermione eventually reveals that she had a Time-Turner, which allows the user to time travel. But if the necklace proved useful at the end of prisoner of azkaban, how and why Hermione came to have one is an equally interesting story. After all, the Time-Turner was owned by the Ministry of Magic, the British wizarding world government that was an untrustworthy and incompetent force later in the series. And on top of that, the ramifications of time travel can be serious, as seen much later in the play. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

At the beginning of prisoner of azkaban, Hermione receives Professor McGonagall’s time-turner, the Headmaster of Gryffindor House and the school’s Transfiguration teacher. According to Hermione, McGonagall had to get special permission from the Ministry of Magic, who loaned it to her due to her school record and made her swear she would only use it for school purposes.

As to why Hermione was given such a powerful and dangerous device, it’s never explicitly explained in the book. But Hermione says McGonagall explained to her that she was a “model student” before entrusting her with one. Maybe McGonagall saw the potential in Hermione and knew someone like her could show that the Time Turner has applications for students looking to get extra credit in school or, in the case of Prisoner of Azkaban finale, save innocent people from evil.

However, the Time Turner proves too much for Hermione to handle, and she ends up returning the device to McGonagall. It’s unknown if other students ended up using one for similar purposes, but it’s hard to imagine someone as capable as Hermione coming along and demanding one. Either way, the Time Turner was as dangerous as it was useful, making it one of the most important items in the wizarding world.
