UK MoD launches ‘Defense Center for AI Research’

July 15, 2022 — The Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (dstl) announced the creation of the Defense Center for AI To research (DCAR) as part of the new version of the Defense AI Strategy and Defense recently created AI Center.

The Center is launched in collaboration with the Alan Turing Institutethe UKthe institute for AI and data science.

Funded by the Chief Science Adviser to the Department of Defence, the center will focus on the underlying issues associated with making progress in AI aptitude. Examples include areas such as:

  • weak short learning – the ability to train machines to learn without the need for large amounts of data
  • the application of AI to war games
  • understand the limitations of AI models
  • management of several sensors
  • human-centric AI
  • ethics

In many cases, the results are expected to be of interest not only to the defence, but also to the general population. UK economy.

While based in London, Turing will use his reach to engage with universities across the country, bringing together UKthe best craftsmanship.

The establishment of the Center is expected to result in the creation of at least 5-8 new academic positions from September 2022, with further growth potential.

The Defense AI Strategy was released in June 2022 with the vision that in terms of AIthe UKit is MOD will be the most effective, efficient, reliable and influential defense organization in the world for its size.

The creation of the DCAR follows the June launch of the Defense Data Research Center (DDRC) as part of a consortium led by the University of Exeter.
