Following the last collection in 1976, the first of the new moon rocks is now returning to Earth with the potential to alter lunar history. Last year, a Chinese space capsule delivered new moon samples to Earth after four decades.
Scientists on moon rocks
According to story by CNet, these lunar rocks have just revealed new details concerning the luminous companion of the planet. Volcanoes would have been alive and active much longer than scientists initially thought.
Professor of geology at Curtin University in Australia and author of the analysis published in the journal Science, Alexander Nemchin, made a statement. It has been noted that all of their experience indicates that the moon should in fact be cold and dead for two billion years now.

Nemchin then noted, “but it’s not, and the question is, why?” With a large and international team of researchers, Nemchin would have discovered that they were looking for some solid confirmation that the lunar service was actually alive quite late in the whole game.
Nemchin noted that they had to dig a lot deeper with this. The statement also mentioned that they were emphasizing that their current views actually needed to be readjusted and that further research will tell how dramatic the whole readjustment should be. NASA’s Lucy spacecraft is expected to launch to study Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids.
The beginning of the Moon Rock saga
The whole saga began in December 2020 when China’s own Chang’e 5 mission actually sent a spacecraft to scrape the entire surface of the moon and even collect a number of rock and dust samples in order to proceed to Earth-based analyzes. He then returned with four books of alien material.
1976 actually marks the last time lunar samples were officially brought back to Earth, which was an accomplishment of the Soviet Union’s own Luna 24 mission. Before that, however, NASA’s Apollo missions were able to travel the path from Earth to the Moon several times and returned with photographs, moon rocks, and even personal anecdotes from the astronauts.

What the new findings could mean
Nemchin explained that there was actually a need and a will to be able to do it 50 years ago. The priorities, however, changed and everyone then moved on to something else. He then noted that they had the moon in focus again. Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink is expected to be deployed next month after sending countless satellites into space.
Nemchin states that lunar research is important not only for astronomy, but also because of the effort to get to the moon or for space exploration. This is because research could accelerate technologies that would benefit those on Earth.
a Cosmos article notes that the focus will now be on analyzing a larger number of fragments to establish how much they differ in chemical composition. This will then help to learn more about the actual specific conditions under which the rocks that were initially volcanic magmas formed.
