National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy to Encourage Technology Driven Economy: Shibli

ISLAMABAD – Federal Science and Technology Minister Senator Syed Shibli Faraz said on Wednesday that the first-ever National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy will not only bring about a revolution in science and technology, but would also create economic activity across the country.

“This policy will help foster a technology-driven economy by engaging industry, academia and government,” the minister said in an interview with APP. The Federal Minister said: “Two such policies were formulated in 1984 and 2009 respectively, which either failed or remained partially successful due to lack of implementation tools and action plan. Such laws that are not enforceable are of no use”.

Considering the same view, the ministry had formulated this policy with an appropriate action plan by taking all stakeholders on board and incorporating the valuable contributions from academia, industry, scientists, technologists and experts. .

The action plan included 62 policy statements and all the tools to achieve the objectives. The policy will soon be shared with the public, he said.

He added that this policy would be a blueprint for the progress of the country, which would illustrate the role of research and development departments and help create a strong link between industry, academia (research and development) and government. Previously, these departments worked in isolation and wasted resources with no result, he added. Shibli Faraz said that since the policy was action-oriented, they should focus on needs-based research through which products could be developed. “We are instilling such a culture where research would be done for practical results, not just for academic purposes.
