KUALA LUMPUR, August 19 – Datuk Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman was today awarded the Merdeka Award in the category of Health, Science and Technology, in recognition of his contribution to mitigating infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS in Malaysia.

“I am deeply touched by this recognition and first want to pay tribute to all the health frontliners in Malaysia who over the past two and a half years have worked tirelessly to overcome the horrors of the Covid-19 pandemic. 19.

“I would naturally like to dedicate this award to my colleagues from the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya; Center of Excellence for AIDS Research (Ceria) Universiti Malaya; Malaysian AIDS Foundation and Council; and his colleagues at the International AIDS Society, because without their dedication, hard work and support, this would not have been possible,” Dr Adeeba said in a statement.

Dr. Adeeba, who is trained in internal medicine and infectious diseases, is responsible for establishing the Infectious Diseases Unit at UM Medical Center and later at Ceria – one of the few research centers dedicated to the HIV in Southeast Asia.

She has also served as an advisor to numerous World Health Organization (WHO) committees on HIV/AIDS and is a member of the UNAIDS Scientific Expert Group on HIV. Last year, she was the first Asian to serve as president of the International AIDS Society. (IAS).

Additionally, she was part of the investigative team that brought the deadly Nipah virus outbreak under control in the late 1990s in Malaysia.

There were six categories for this year’s Merdeka Award.

Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Siti Zuraina Abdul Majid received the award for outstanding academic achievement, while Datuk Dr Annabel Teh Gallop won the award for outstanding contribution to the people of Malaysia.

Organizations, Teach for Malaysia and Global Environment Center received awards in the Education and Community, and Environment categories respectively).

Samuel Isaiah received the new Anugerah Harapan Merdeka for improving and raising the level of education of Orang Asli children.

The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah presented the awards.

The Merdeka Award Trust was established by Petronas and Shell in August 2007, to recognize and reward outstanding individuals and organizations whose works and achievements have not only contributed to the growth of the nation, but have also inspired the greatness of the people. Malaysian.
