DC Comics is developing Legion of Super-Heroes TV show for HBO Max

HBO Max is developing a Legion of superheroes animated series for adults, with comic book creator Brian Michael Bendis as part of the creative team. The prolific writer broke the news in his latest newsletter, where he also gave some details on how the series came to be. Bendis previously wrote the last volume of Legion of superheroes, and the DC superhero team of the future will soon crossover with the Justice League in 2022, written by Bendis and illustrated by Scott Godlewski. The writer also writes Justice League, though he’ll be leaving the book in March.

After talking about HBO Max’s animated adaptation of its title Dark Horse Comics and artist David Mack Blanket, Bendis said the streaming service asked him what other DC properties he thinks would make an interesting show. Of course, being a huge Legion of Super-Heroes fan, Bendis enthusiastically suggested the team, and HBO Max accepted the offer.

“HBO Max put me to work on a LEGION OF SUPERHEROES TV show,” Bendis revealed. “At the moment it’s being developed as an animated show for adults. Can you tell I’m jumping up and down on this? I’ve been working on it for a while and last week I got sent to the next phase. “

Bendis also revealed that the adult animated series will be an adaptation of DC’s latest film. Legion of superheroes comic book by Bendis and artist Ryan Sook. “And just like this series, on sale now, it will return to so many classics while doing what Legion does: pushing all superhero ideas forward in all directions,” he said. “I think Legion of Superheroes is one of the greatest franchises in comic book history and I’m as honored to host them as I was Spider-Man.”

He then warned that the animation is taking a long time to produce, so new information on the animated show will take some time to be announced.

A Legion of superheroes animated series aired two seasons in 2006, following the adventures of a young Superman in the 31st century. The Bendis and Sook DC comic reversed the storyline by placing Superman’s son Jon Kent as a member of the team in the future, thanks to time travel. Given that the HBO Max series is an adaptation of that same comic, we can assume that Jon Kent Superboy will be one of the main stars. Members of the Legion have also appeared on the CW series Live Super girl, and in this season Young Justice: Ghosts.
